To everyone else present that might come in danger, she gave a choice. She gave a choice to the security guards and staff working in that abandoned building on the night of the party because it wasn’t their free choice to be there; they were working.
In the after-hours, Verna, garnering the twins’ hungering ambitions, offers them a proposal. The twins can have unending power and luxury without any legal repercussions for their actions. In return, they would only need to barter away their future generations. Since Verna looks as young as she did decades ago, Madeline tries to reason that the woman at her nephew’s and nieces’ deaths is actually Verna’s daughter. Perhaps Roderick’s pattern has landed him another heir, this one more psychotic than most.
Verna certainly talked about herself at various times as though she is, like when she mentioned “loopholes” and unbreakable pacts. When she made an offer to Arthur Pym she even mentioned having to “come up” to see his infamous Transglobe Expedition, as though she came from Hell to Earth. However, for as much evidence that points to Verna being the Devil, there’s just as much that indicates she’s not. Though this isn't fully revealed until the final episode, Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline struck a deal with Verna at a bar—on New Year's Eve, no less—before he had any children. The devil's bargain granted them wealth, power, and freedom to commit any crime, in exchange for the lives of everyone with his bloodline. When it would be time for Roderick Usher to go, the House of Usher would fall with him.
Roderick is intellectual and bookish, and his twin sister, Madeline, is ill and bedridden. Roderick’s inability to distinguish fantasy from reality resembles his sister’s physical weakness. Poe uses these characters to explore the philosophical mystery of the relationship between mind and body. With these twins, Poe imagines what would happen if the connection between mind and body were severed and assigned to separate people.
After bricking up his boss — like in the classic Poe story “The Cask of Amontillado” — Roderick and Madeline Usher find themselves in a bar on New Year’s Eve. Madeline and Roderick ended up believing that their encounter with Verna was a figment of their imagination, as they were under the influence that night. It is only years later that they realize that all of that really happened.
