When Pamela Hockett found out she had breast cancer, she immediately began researching treatment options. “It was clear that MD Anderson, seven hours away, was the only medical facility that offered the treatment I needed,” she says. “The realization that I needed weekly treatment so far from home added an additional burden. There were 188 housing units at an average density of 159.3 per square mile (61.5/km2), of which 134 (81.2%) were owner-occupied, and 31 (18.8%) were occupied by renters. 386 people (82.7% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 81 people (17.3%) lived in rental housing units.

A primary caregiver is required to stay with patients when receiving treatment. All primary caregivers must be 18 years of age, however there is no age restriction on a patient to qualify. Patients can qualify to stay at Ballard House regardless of age or financial situation. To date, Ballard House has never charged guests anything because of the kindness of sponsors, donors, volunteers, and the Katy community.

“Cinco Charities, Inc. was born to provide temporary housing for patients and their caregivers coming to the Katy/West Houston area medical facilities to treat life-threatening illnesses,” Brown says. Applications to stay at The Ballard House are filled out online at their website and are approved on a need and availability basis. The goal of The Ballard House is to make sure no one goes without necessary medical care due to the costs of staying away from home for treatment. There are approximately 14 Katy/Houston area hospitals, including MD Anderson, that regularly refer people to The Ballard House when the need arises. When guests stay, they reside in their own private cottage at The Ballard House while volunteers provide food and hospitality to the guests. Patients who are receiving treatment for a life threatening or critical illness.

Passion for a Mission In 2011, Erin Ballard heard about this problem while she was undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Katy. Her oncologist, Dr. Suni Patel, told her about Cinco Charities, a non-profit dedicated to providing temporary housing for patients and their caregivers coming to Katy area medical facilities for treatment of life-threatening illnesses. Since 2006, Cinco Charities had housed these families in nearby hotels, with the ultimate goal of building a free-of-charge hospitality house that would be open to patients and their families.
